Wolves did reasonably well in the immediate aftermath of Knowles’s departure, losing only two of the next twelve games. The manager signed Mike O’Grady, an England winger from Leeds United, and Bernard Shaw, a full back from Sheffield United. Neither made a huge long-term impact. The decent form deserted the team. They finished the season appallingly, drawing five and losing eight of their last thirteen games. They were also dumped out of the FA Cup in the third round on a frozen pitch at Burnley. The change in manager didn’t seem to be getting the club very far.
